How Dana finished college and recovered from bankruptcy

Dream Makers in Action

A single mother of two boys, Dana had put off completing her college degree due to various life events and was working to reestablish her credit after a bankruptcy when she connected with Genevieve in our La Jolla branch. She’d only been a member for six months and wondered if there was any way we could help. That day changed her family’s life.

Dana was thrilled to walk away from that first meeting with the money she needed to finish school, but Genevieve knew we could do more. So, she did some research and mapped out a plan for Dana to save money by refinancing the higher interest car loan from her bankruptcy, and rebuild her credit with a low limit BluPeak Credit Union credit card. Dana stuck to the plan and over time saw her credit rating go up almost 150 points!

But there’s more. With her financial life back on track, Dana again turned to Genevieve when she was ready to purchase her dream car. It was a goal she’d placed on her vision board a year earlier – a reward for completing her degree and doing the hard work to improve her credit. Genevieve came through for her once again, this time with a quick preapproval that enabled Dana to purchase her car that same day, with additional savings. Officially part of the graduating class of 2020, Dana is now looking forward to partnering with Genevieve on her next goal: buying her first home for her boys!
